Day curfew was relaxed in riot-hit Mau town of Uttar Pradesh for the first time today since an indefinite curfew was clamped following communal violence here on October 14.All the markets have been allowed to open, though in phased manner, to enable residents to do shopping on the occasion of Diwali and Eid. No untoward incident had been reported so far anywhere in the district, Mr Rajendra Pal Singh, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range), Azamgarh told UNI. The residents in the town were shopping in large number following relaxation of the curfew, Mr Singh added. Yesterday, the curfew was relaxed from 0900 to 1700 hrs in the northern areas of Mau, while some localities of the southern part of Mau had relaxation between 0830 to 1330 hrs. Today is the first day when the curfew was relaxed in the entire district, Mr Singh said. Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, raids are still being conducted to nab elements accused of fomenting communal trouble and rioting. More than 422 persons had so far been arrested in the wake of communal riots which claimed seven lives, besides causing injuries to 37 others. UNI SB ARS MSJ DS1356
